Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Climate change poses a significant threat to agriculture globally, with rural communities in Nigeria bearing the brunt of its effects. In Gusau Local Government, Zamfara State, climate-induced challenges such as erratic rainfall, desertification, and soil degradation have disrupted agricultural productivity, affecting livelihoods and food security. Print media, through investigative reporting, feature articles, and editorial campaigns, plays a vital role in raising awareness about these issues and advocating for adaptive strategies (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). By educating farmers, influencing public opinion, and pressuring policymakers, print media serves as a catalyst for action on climate resilience. This study evaluates the effectiveness of print media coverage in highlighting the impact of climate change on agriculture in Gusau, focusing on its influence on awareness, behavior, and policy responses.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The agricultural sector in Gusau faces escalating challenges due to climate change, yet awareness and adoption of adaptive measures remain low. While print media has been instrumental in reporting climate-related issues, its effectiveness in driving awareness and action among farmers and policymakers is unclear. Barriers such as low literacy levels among rural farmers, limited access to newspapers, and inadequate resources for comprehensive reporting hinder the impact of print media campaigns (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024). This study addresses these issues by assessing the effectiveness of print media coverage in promoting climate-smart agricultural practices and policy interventions in Gusau Local Government.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

To analyze the themes and strategies of print media coverage on climate change and agriculture in Gusau Local Government.

To assess the impact of print media on public awareness and adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices.

To evaluate the influence of print media on policy initiatives addressing climate change in agriculture in Gusau.

Limitations include potential biases in media content and challenges in accessing data on media readership in rural areas.
